SPITALFIELDS

The Porters' Toll

A collection of photographs by Mark Jackson and Huw Davies.

In 1991, Spitalfields all-night fruit and vegetable emporium moved from it's site on Brushfield Street, London E1, to Hackney Marshes.

Photographers Mark Jackson and Huw Davies spent the year preceding the move recording the working lives of the men and woman who made the market such a distinct place in London's East End.

The entire collection of striking black and white pictures, totalling more that 4,500 images, is now on loan at the Bishopsgate Institute in London.

An exhibition of their pictures is currently running at the Institute in London.

Their pictures have also featured on Spitalfieldslife.com and in the book of the same name by the gentle author.
